Down, down, down…then up, Up.
I’m talking values on John Deere S680 used Combines.
Deere made the popular S600 Series (S550, S660, S670, S680, S690) from 2012 - 2017, so now 4 to nearly 10 years old. Hop into the FREE “Auction Price Data” section of our www.MachineryPete.com web site and punch up John Deere S680 then click on the “Avg. Pricing” tab to reveal some eye opening data on Avg. Auction Price on S680 combines over the past 7 years:
Note how from 2017 - 2019 S680 combine values were dropping at a steady clip. Of course depreciation is to be expected with any late model piece of farm equipment, or car, truck, etc. And of course profits on the farm were tight for the years 2017 - 2019. But here are the facts.

Machinery Pete Ratio (MPR) = 77.0% (Avg. Auction Price / Avg. Dealer Ad Price)
I have been calculating what I call the “Machinery Pete Ratio” (MPR) for 18 years now. Avg. Auction Price divided by Avg. Dealer Advertised Price on any piece of farm equipment. What I’ve found over these past 18 years is that any time the Machinery Pete Ratio falls in the 71 - 76% range…that = historically normal. As you drift below MPR of 70% that indicates a soft spot in the used equipment market.
Conversely, drift above 76% and that tends to indicated a Hot spot in the used farm equipment.
So MPR of 77.0% on John Deere S680 Combines right now as we begin 2nd Qtr. '21. Pretty indicative of the overall heat with used equipment values. The used Tractor market…WAY HOTTER.
