What's 1993 JD 4960 with 8799 Hours and Overhauled Engine Worth?

Time for "Ask Machinery Pete". Today's question came via Facebook message from Kari:

"Need some help. We have 4 tractors to be sold. My husband would like your help on this one, a 1993 John Deere 4960 with 8,799 hours. Husband rebuilt the engine, overhauled and much more. Thank you."

Here's a picture of their 1993 John Deere 4960 with 8,799 hours:

OK Kari, let's start off with a look at our auction sale price data. Using the new search filters in our http://www.machinerypete.com web site I have limited our search to 4960's with between 6,000 - 11,000 hours, so your 4960 with 8,799 hours right in the middle. Clicking our our "Avg. Pricing" tool, here's what we find:

John Deere 4960 Tractors with 6,000 - 11,000 Hours

Calendar Year Avg. Auction Price High Low
2017 $33,057 $59,000 $12,750
2016 $31,698 $54,000 $15,500
2015 $34,471 $56,000 $19,50

* Data from http://www.machinerypete.com

But remember Kari said their 1993 model 4960 with 8,799 hours has had an engine overhaul plus further work done to it. So let's suppose it's as nice a 4960 in this hour range as we'll run across. Now let's narrow our focus to what the nicest 4960's have sold for the last 2 years at auction in this hour range. Here's the data:

Highest Auction Prices Last 2 Years on JD 4960 Tractors with 6,000 - 11,000 Hours

Note the 2nd 4960 listed here, a "1 owner" 1993 model with 7,578 hours and less than 900 hours on a complete engine out of frame rebuild, sold on a January 22, 2016 farm auction in Williamsport, OH by our good friends at The Wendt Group (http://www.thewendtgroup.com). Here's a picture of that 1993 model sold for $54,000:

Interestingly, the only higher auction sale price the past 2 years on a John Deere 4960 with between 6,000 and 11,000 hours also came from Ohio, the 1992 model 4960 with 6,054 hours (pictured below) sold for $59,000 on a March 4, 2017 farm auction in Uniontown, OH by the good folks at Kiko Auction Company (http://www.kikoauctions.com):

So that's a look at the wholesale auction side of things, but what about retail pricing...what are farm equipment dealers asking for similar John Deere 4960 Tractors with between 6,000 - 11,000 hours? We don't have to guess. Just hop on over to our Machinery Pete web site and using our handy new search filters, couple clicks and we get this list of (28) 4960's for sale today all around the country with between 6,000 - 11,000 hours. Click this link to view them: http://tinyurl.com/yauochax

Quite interesting...when you click on the link to the (28) John Deere 4960's dealers have for sale today in the 6,000 - 11,000 hour range, you can sort the results and see that 27 of them are priced from $35,000 up to $57,995. So retail pricing in fact exactly in line with auction pricing.

Shows how popular the John Deere 4960 tractor model is.

Can't get enough of John Deere 4960's? Ok, here's some more fun 4960 content for you...first the story of the 1992 John Deere 4960 with only 14 actual hours on it that sat outside its whole life, trees growing up all around it, was rescued and brought to life:

And here's a fun Youtube video I posted last December about the very last 4960 tractor made by Deere, a 1994 model with only 6 actual hours on it, held by Deere at their historical archives:
