I'm closing in on 1 million auction sale prices I've compiled the past 28 1/2 years. Occasionally I get stopped in my tracks. Wow.
Tuesday (April 3, 2018) on a farm retirement auction for Tracy Schumacher in Scranton, ND (southwest North Dakota), a 1979 John Deere 4440 tractor sold. It was in original, 1 owner condition. Tracy took immaculate care of his equipment. It was a power shift. It had 10,312 hours on it.
Sold for $38,000. Here's a picture of it:
Nope, wasn't family members fighting over it that drove the sale price toward $40K. I spoke with Heather Weishaar of Weishaar Auction Service (http://www.weishaarauctions.com) who had the sale Tuesday. "Tracy was very meticulous," said Weishaar. "His equipment was very well cared for. A gentleman from New York called about it. Two older brother from northern North Dakota were bidding on it. They talked about having 4440's and how they were the best tractor."
"But it came down to two local farmers bidding on it."
$38,0000.
How high is that? Well, here's a look at Avg. Auction Price on John Deere 4440 Tractors back through the years:

The highest auction sale price ever on a John Deere 4440 is still $58,000, for the 1982 model 4440 with only 47 actual hours on it, sold on a farm estate auction 3/6/09 in west-central Illinois. Here's a picture of it:

One trend gaining strength here the past 6 mo....buyers placing more value on finding and acquiring "original" condition used tractors 10 plus years old either with very low hours and/or very well taken care of.
Like Tracy Schumacher's 1979 John Deere 4440 with 10,312 hours...sold for $38,000 on Tuesday.
